In August 2019, a group of young women met with big dreams of creating a group where we can celebrate each other and our achievements. There were plans for book clubs, feminist film Fridays, weekly catch ups, as well as renovating the women's room and providing a safe space where people of all genders could feel comfortable looking for help. We were so excited & optimistic. Our dreams were dashed before we could even get started. Our representatives, the very people we elect to advocate for us to the uni, decided a Women's Collective was 'unnecessary'. In doing so they showed exactly why we're needed.
Despite that, WoCo has achieved all we set out to do without the support of the Union. As secretary, I’ve organised events, worked with the new Acting Vice-Chancellor, & met with media to get your story out there.
Too often this year, elected representatives have failed to fight for female students. Yet UNITE advocated to bring students exam welfare packs, your right to vote online, mandatory sexual assault & disclosure training, and supported the WoCo when the Union wouldn’t.
Vote for the entire UNITE team for AUU & SRC to affiliate WoCo!
