This year was a test. Historic attacks against students were announced by the Liberal government. But the union didn't mobilise its resources to fight fee hikes and funding cuts. Instead, it banned SRC participation in the education campaign, and forbade discussion of the cuts. When university administration attacked education quality with mass firings of staff, the silent union effectively sided with management.

Further, the bigotry of the right-wing majority has been confirmed through the affiliation of anti-abortion clubs and the banning of the Women's Collective.

Student unions must be progressive bodies that fight down the line for students. But years of conservative and careerist Labor control have made our union a meaningless, right-wing service provider. Today, it runs more like a corporate board than an independent activist body.

If our conservative university admin can put out a statement in support of BLM, our union must at least give a platform to campaigns for social justice. When our VC and government attack staff and students, our union has to take up the fight.

On the AUU, I'll be a staunch voice for social justice and bring progressive campaigns into our union.

Don’t settle for careerist student politicians for AUU.

Vote 1 Left Action for a fighting, activist union. https://leftactionadelaide.com/
